Fight For Your Life
We come to Jesus broken and deceived, filthy in our sin. He cleans us up. He washes away our sin and gives us constant access to God. It is the beginning of a whole new life. On this road of life, though, you will face trials and tribulations. You will have to fight for this new life as there will be many battles for your soul and the greatest of these will take place within you.
For the weapons of our warfare are not physical [weapons of flesh and blood], but they are mighty before God for the overthrow and destruction of strongholds.
2 Cor 10:4 The Amplified Bible
The biggest and toughest battles we will face are internal. They occur within us as we separate ourselves from the way we used to live and what we used to believe so that we can make room for the growth of our new self, our new life, in Jesus Christ. Our internal struggles with selfishness, independence, greed and the lies we believed to be true are strong chains that hold us in place and prevent us from living closer to God. They keep us captive to a false sense of security in which we rely on our own efforts instead of God. Strongholds are the chains of wrong thinking that stop us from living in the true freedom and peace of Christ. Learning to live generously, trusting God over ourselves, and accepting His Word as the only truth we will believe are some of battles we will encounter.
Human nature is to be consumed with self and our culture emphasizes taking care of yourself and keeping what you got, while always trying to get more. The mistake here is that it keeps us at the top of our list of priorities. We become so self absorbed that we not only shut others out of our hearts but we also step on them in our quest to satisfy ourselves. The life we are called to live in Christ is completely opposite to this. It is only through the power of God that we can overcome and destroy these strongholds.
The Message Bible puts 2 Cor 10:4 this way: We use our powerful God-tools for smashing warped philosophies, tearing down barriers errected against the truth of God, fitting every loose thought, emotion and impulse into the structure of life shaped by Christ.
God enables us to overcome anything that tries to stop us from imitating Jesus and having the abundant life He has given us. Ephesians Chapter 6 describes the armor that God has given us. In verse 17 it says the Bible, the Word of God, is our sword. With it we can cut apart and remove the lies of our old life. Using God's Word, speaking it out loud and believing it with all we are, is key to winning. The best part is our victory is guaranteed (1 Cor 15:57). So unless we give up and quit, we will win. We may fall sometimes in the heat of the battle but by the strength of God given to us in His Word, we can get up, resume the fight, and receive the victory.
