Know for Yourself

Open your mouth and taste, open your eyes and see - how good God is.  Blessed are you who run to Him.
                                            Psalm 34:8 The Message Bible

I have had this verse stuck in my mind all night at work.  God is food for my spirit.  He is Light so I can see.  How great is our God!  I cannot praise Him enough.  I never get tired of saying, "God, You are so wonderful and amazing!"  God is everything I need.  He is bigger and stronger and wiser than anyone.  Nothing compares to the beauty of His presence.

In this verse from Psalm 34 there are three commands and a promise.  The first command is to open your mouth and taste the goodness of God.  Jesus is the bread of Life (John 6:48 NKJ).  We have to eat this bread to nourish our spirit before we will see the changes brought on by God's grace in our life.  What this means is that you must read your Bible everyday.  Do you go a whole day without food for your body?  Most of us do not.  So don't neglect to feed your spirit either.  Even if you only read one verse or one chapter a day, read something.  Take your time with it.  Think about what you read and pay attention to the words.  Roll them around in your head.  Ponder their meanings.  This is not a contest to see who gets done first, so take your time.  Ask God to show you how the words apply to your life.  Don't get discouraged if you find yourself in one verse for a while.  I have actually spent several weeks in one verse alone and I promise, everyday was a new lesson, something I had not seen before.

The second command is to open your eyes and recognize God in your life.  He will be difficult to see if you have not looked first into His word to find Him.  The Bible says that God's word is a lamp unto our feet (Psalm 119:105 NKJ).  It lights up the path before us so that we will know which way to go.  The book of Proverbs is full of insights on how to live wisely in this world.  The Word of God will lead and guide you through all the seasons of your life.  Everyone who runs toward God will make it (Psalm 18:30 The Message Bible).

Knowing God and His Word is the key to wisdom.  You cannot trust everything you see, think, or feel but you can always trust God's Word.  As a nurse, I see many people encounter and overcome great obstacles and heartbreak.  I don't know the "why" behind the things that happen and I don't have to.  All I have to know is God.  No matter what I see, I am committed to believing God over everything.  This is not foolishness as some people think, but it is wisdom.  The Bible tells us that the things we see are temporary and will perish (2 Cor. 4:18 The Amplified Bible).  We are to keep our trust in God and God only.

My help and glory are in God - granite strength and safe-harbor-God - so trust Him absolutely, people, lay your lives on the line for Him.  God is a safe place to be.
                                              Psalm 62:7-8 The Message Bible

In order to know God, you have to make the effort to find Him.  No one else can know God for you.  You have to know God for yourself and that is the third command.  Pursue God.  Seek Him.  Reading your Bible everyday feeds your spirit with His truth, opens your eyes to His presence in your life, and is the platform from which you are launched in order to make a difference in the lives of the people around you.  It is how you change your world.  It is where your blessings are.

The blessings of God are like buried treasure.  You must search His Word in order to find and keep them.  You will be surprised and delighted as God not only reveals Himself to you but as He pours out in abundance His grace and mercy in every area of your life.  It is an extreme makeover like you have never seen before.

I pray you will experience to the fullest the abundance of wealth in God's Word for you.
