These Hands - Part 2

I had a dream one night about being at a soldier's funeral.  His grieving mother sat on the front row with his family and I was asked to speak.  As I began to talk, I held out my hands to his mom.  I had her hold my hands as I told how these hands had cared for her son and held him as he died.  These hands, I told her, are God's hands and they loved her son.  As I woke up from this dream I was awestruck by how much God uses our hands and how little we recognize it.

As I thought about our hands, I saw them being used to help people up, to celebrate successes, to care for our loved ones, and to praise God.  Our hands are used to raise children, make meals, clean house, shop, and pick out gifts.  They place band aids, catch balls, and drive cars.  With our hands, we serve each other in church and in our community. A pat on the back can mean "well done" or "Hey, I'm here for you".  Holding hands demonstrates unity and fellowship.  Hugs can be joyful and strengthening.  As a nurse, I use my hands to give medicines and treatments that help our bodies heal.  Garbage men remove waste from our environment, teachers help our children learn new concepts and tasks, and waiters and waitresses serve us meals when we eat out.  Think about how you use your hands on the job.

We all use our hands to do so many things and until I had this dream, I did not think much of my hands but now I see that our hands are God's hands.  Look at your hands.  They are the hands of God.  Gen. 1:26 says we are made in the likeness and image of God.  He uses our hands to create beauty through music and art just as He created beauty in the plants, mountains, animals, and waters of this earth..  He uses our hands to reach out to the lost with acceptance and respect.  Our hands are used for the protection and support of the defenseless and to comfort the broken hearted.  Everyday, God uses your hands to do make a difference in this world.

Remember the hands of Christ.  How did He use His hands?  Pierced through for our transgressions, Jesus cleanses us from all our sin and makes us right with God.  His holy hands carry us and protect us.  He holds us up and comforts us.
Look at your hands.  They are holy hands. Now say out loud, "These are the hands of God."  Keep looking at your hands while repeating this.  Begin to think of all the things you have done today with God's hands.  If you have done anything with your hands you are not proud of, repent and start using them for the glory of God.  Choose to let your hands be God's hands.

Hands lifted in praise are as powerful as the hands clasped in prayer.
