What Time is it?
I am having a play day today. That means, I am not doing any work. I did a 5K fun run this morning, went out for breakfast and I am going to the movies in a few hours. As I talked to God this morning about what I had planned for today, I tried to remember the last day off I had that I spent doing only fun things. It was in August.
In Ecclesiastes chapter 3, it says there is a time for every purpose under heaven. There is time for joy and tears, planting and harvesting, feasting and fasting, time to dance, laugh, and sing. There is also time for work, serving, studying, teaching, giving, and grieving.
In John 10:10 Jesus says He came that we might have life and life more abundant. If we are going to have an abundant life then we are going to have to learn how to balance things. For me, that means I have to use a calendar and make sure that I schedule and plan for all the things I like to do and the things I need to do.
If you spend all your time working, you will wear out. If you spend all your time playing, you will have lack. If all you do is serve, you become hollow. Balance is required. Too much of anything is not a good thing. Time for rest and fun and learning need to be included with the work and service.
Balancing fun, work, and rest with serving and learning is key to living a lively and effective God first life. With so many things competing for your time, it is up to you to carefully evaluate what you spend your time doing. We cannot expect to reach our full potential without planning ahead and disciplining ourselves to follow through on our commitments.
