On His Shoulder

I recently read (for the first time) the Chronicles of Narnia and I have watched the movies.  What really impressed me was the way Lucy would run up to and embrace Aslan.  The books say that she would bury her face in his mane and take big deep breaths.

My heart would swell at the vision of the pure unrestrained love she would demonstrate.  It made me think about how Jesus wants us to come to Him.  So, I asked Him to teach me about this.

That was weeks ago.  I got the lesson today.

I was on the elliptical this morning listening to the book of John from the Message on my iPod.  Jesus was at the last supper with His disciples and they were puzzled by Jesus' comment that one of them would betray Him.  Then I heard the following verse:

One of the disciples, the one Jesus loved dearly, was reclining against Him, his head on His shoulder.
                                                          John 13:23 Message

John had his head on the shoulder of Christ.  He was so close to Jesus that he could lean back on Him and lay his head on His shoulder.  Clearly, they loved each other.

Jesus loves us too and He wants us to lean upon Him in love and rest.  My heart skipped a beat, I'm sure, and a picture formed in my mind.

I was running to Jesus with my arms wide open.  I threw myself upon Him, laughing as His arms wrapped around me without hesitating.  Joy consumes my heart, my mind, and my spirit.  I cannot speak.  All I can do is absorb the awesome wonder of His love for me.  I lay my head on His shoulder and prolong the moment.  The beauty!  The peace!  The overflowing contentment of being right where I belong.

As I enjoyed the vision of love shared between me and Jesus, I was reminded of when my girls were little.

They loved to come snuggle in my bed or lay with me on the couch.  We would laugh and cuddle and whisper with complete abandon.  There was nothing better than feeling those little arms wrap around me as giggles filled the air.

Then I understood.  Jesus wants us to express our love for Him in the same way.  He always wants us to be that close to Him.  He wants us to cuddle and laugh with Him.  He wants us to lay our head on His shoulder.

I suppose He gets sad when all we do is come to Him with a list of demands and don't stop and sit for a spell.

Life is busy and some days there just isn't enough time to get everything done.  We run ourselves ragged, eat poorly and give up sleep in order to get our "to do" lists done.  We get grumpy and short-tempered with each other when things don't go our way.

I'm betting we would get a lot more done, have a lot more energy, and we would be a lot happier if we spent more time laying our head on Jesus' shoulder instead.

Experience the joy that can only be found in the arms of Christ.  Snuggle with Jesus and lay your head on His shoulder.
