Abide and Trust
As we seek to abide in Christ and to really live with Him and like Him, it is important to note that we do not feed or nourish Him. He feeds and nourishes us.
Remember, you aren't feeding the root; the root is feeding you.
Rom. 11:18 Message
Using the same concept from John 15 of Jesus being the vine and us the branches let me try to give you a better picture of this.
Trees get their nourishment from their roots. The roots of a tree extend below the earth's surface twice as deep as the tree is tall. Within the tree is a system (similar to the blood vessels in the human body) that moves needed nutrients from the roots up the tree to the branches and removes waste.
Abiding in Christ is the same as being rooted in Christ which means that your life supply comes from Jesus Christ. Everything you need is provided for by Jesus. He is your supplier. He meets the demands necessary for your life to thrive and prosper.
When you snap a branch off of a tree, it dies because it is no longer being fed what it needs for life. So too, when you break your connection with Jesus, you will go without your needs being met.
Be humbly mindful of the root that keeps you lithe and green.
Rom. 11:20 Message
As I stop and think about this, I can see the nutrients moving through the tree from the roots to the branches. Everything needed for health and growth comes from the roots via pathways in the trunk.
Using this picture it is easier to recognize how much we need God. He supplies everything we need. He is the root and the trunk. Through Jesus, God is continuously supplying us with all the nutrients we need to grow and develop. All that He is and all that He has is given to us because we believe in Jesus.
Our trust in Jesus is how we keep the flow from God moving through our lives. He is the pathway that supplies the needs of our life. Through Him we stay healthy and productive and in covenant with God.
Our lives depend on God's mercy and grace. In order to receive from God, we must be confident that whatever we may need, He will supply. It is in being mindful of God's constant provision that we stay connected to Him.
To abide in Christ is to trust in His faithfulness.
