The Gift of Holiness
I think the Book of John is my favorite Gospel. There is so much in it that everytime I read it, I get excited. I always find something new, something I had not seen before. The life and power of the words of Christ come off the pages at me. Today I am looking at the gift of holiness that He has given us.
This is part of Jesus' last prayer with His disciples.
Make them holy by Your truth; teach them Your Word, which is truth.....And I give myself as a holy sacrifice for them so they can be made holy by your truth.
John 17:17, 19 NLT
We are made holy through the blood of Jesus Christ - it is a gift from God. Through learning the word of God we grow in holiness.
I used to think that the more I memorized God's Word, the more holy I was. But that is not true. Holiness is not developed by memorizing a bunch of scripture. We grow in holiness when we let God's word live in us.
So you must live as God's obedient children. Don't slip back into your old ways of living to satisfy your own desires. You didn't know any better then. But now you must be holy in everything you do, just as God who chose you is holy. For the Scriptures say, "You must be holy because I am holy."
1 Peter 1:14-16 NLT
These verses tell us that effort on our part is required in order to grow and develop in holiness. Just because we are made holy by Jesus does not mean that we are able to sit back and take it easy. We can no longer live any way we want to. Our love for God compells us to obey Him even when our mind tries to argue against it.
The gift of holiness comes with the command to obey God's word.
