Effort
Listen to the words of the wise; apply your heart to my instructions. For it is good to keep these sayings in your heart and always ready on your lips. I am teaching you today - yes, you - so you will trust in the Lord.
Prov. 22:17-19 NLT
These words have been on my mind all week and we have spent some time looking at them separately but I wanted you to see them all together. As I thought about these verses, I realized that how well we perform is not as important as the effort we make.
The Bible does not promise that the first time we try to reflect Christ that we will do so perfectly. What we are promised is that as we seek God and do the best we can without quitting, then we will be changed. Not only that, God will help us and make up for anything we lack.
In Ephesians chapter 6 it says when you've done all you can do - stand. We stand on (trust in) God's promise to help us . We have to do our part first and God will always back us up.
Everything that goes into a life of pleasing God has been miraculously given to us by getting to know, personally and intimately, the One who invited us to God. The best invitation we have ever received! We were also given absolutely terrific promises to pass on to you - your tickets to participation in the life of God after you turned your back on a world corrupted by lust. So don't lose a minute in building on what you've been given, complementing your basic faith with good character, spiritual understanding, alert discipline, passionate patience, reverent wonder, warm friendliness, and generous love, each dimension fitting into and developing the others. With these qualities actively growing in your lives, no grass will grow under your feet, no day will pass without it's reward as you mature in your experience of our Master Jesus. Without these qualities you can't see what's right before you, oblivious that your old sinful life has been wiped off the books.
2 Peter 1:3-9 Message
Wisdom is not developed in a day.
It takes a life time of practice to become like Christ. Every day presents us with the choice to live with God. There will always be something growing and developing in us.
Pursue wisdom, pursue God.
God notices your efforts. Keep your eyes fixed on Him. Don't quit. You will receive
