Living Wisely 1

I have come upon a few verses from Proverbs 22 that I would like to talk about this week.   I have a feeling that many people just go through the motions of reading their Bibles (if they read them at all) and they don't really take the time to think about what they are reading.

I want to challenge you this week to see your Bible in new ways.  The Bible is God speaking to you deeply and intimately.  It is His wisdom laid out for you to apply to your life.  It is His love revealed to you through the life and work of Jesus Christ.  The Bible is the very word of God and in it you will find His promises of joy, peace, protection, provision and blessing on those who love Him and follow Him.

Following God does not come naturally.  By nature we are selfish beings and this makes putting God first seem unnatural but the truth is that even though our fleshly bodies seem to protest the loudest, it is, in fact, the weakest part of our being.

Our spirit man is more powerful than our flesh but many people live believing the lie that their flesh is stronger.

Now is the time for God's people to put their flesh down and let their spirit lead.  There is not a minute to waste.  We are not guaranteed a tomorrow but we have today and what we spend our time doing today will determine what our tomorrow holds.  So instead of making excuses for not reading the Bible, make the decision to put God first in your life starting right now.

Reading your Bible is the first step in living wisely and the book of Proverbs is a great place to start.  It is overflowing with wisdom and insight that will help you live closer to God.

Listen to the words of the wise; apply your heart to my instruction.
                                                         Prov. 22:17 NLT

When you apply your heart to God it means you make time to read His Word.  This is not a race to see who reads it the fastest or who can read the most.  It does not matter if you read one verse or one chapter.  The point is to put your heart into understanding what you are reading.  Don't make any rules for yourself during this time.  Simply sit with God and let Him lead you.

This will be difficult at first and your mind may wander to other things but don't give up.  Keep going back to what you have read.  Ask God to help you understand it and to show you how to apply it to your life.  Ask the Holy Spirit to help you live it out.  Write it down on an index card or type it into your phone.  Reread it through out the day.

Do not underestimate the power of God's Word.  Read your Bible every day with an attitude of expectancy.  Know that it feeds your spirit just like the food you eat nourishes your physical body.
