To Lose Is To Gain
I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat is planted in the soil and dies, it remains alone. But its death will produce many new kernels -- a plentiful harvest of new lives. Those who love their life in this world will lose it. Those who care nothing for their life in this world will keep it for eternity.
John 12:24-25 NLT
The shell of a seed planted in the ground cracks under the pressure from the soil it is in. As the seed opens, roots stretch out below the surface and create a network of fibers that will grow and produce a plant that will bear much fruit. From one seed will come many blooms.
The same concept applies to our lives in Christ.
We are one seed and God commands us to live outside of ourselves. The command itself is to love, first God then others and ourselves last. The common Christian saying is to "die to self" which really just means putting what God wants first in your life before what you want.
Believing in Jesus and serving in a local church is how we plant ourselves in God's soil. By reaching out to others while trusting God to provide for our own needs we put action to our faith. This is where we lose our love for the things of this world because we recognize the greater value of the eternal life that can only be found in Jesus.
You still have to take care of yourself while reaching out to assist those in need. You work hard and take care of your family and you tithe but while doing these things, you trust God to supply what you lack as you extend a helping hand out to others.
Living for God means we live to help others.
The more we reach out to help others, the more room we give God to prove His faithfulness by taking care of us. This is how we inspire and motivate people to turn away from the world's insanity and to reach out for the mercy, love, and grace of God.
The people we influence to turn to God are counted as the fruit of our lives. We are now producers and not just consumers in this world. Our harvest in the kingdom of God is based on the people we have helped here on earth.
As long as we live life for ourselves, staying self-centered and putting ourselves first, we are useless to God. We become like the unplanted seed when we try to keep for ourselves what we were meant to share - we remain alone.
Let go of your affections for the things of this world and embrace the true wealth of living God's way by helping others come to know Jesus.
