Ask
If any of you is deficient in wisdom, let him ask of the giving God [who gives] to everyone liberally and ungrudgingly, without reproaching or fault finding, and it will be given him.
James 1:5 Amplified
When we ask God for help, He does not stop and look at our behavior or lecture us on our poor choices. There is no 30 minute lecture on how we need to listen to Him better.
When we ask God for help, that is exactly what He gives us. God gives generously to us when we ask because He loves us. He holds nothing back. He gives us as much as we want.
This is one of the things I love most about God. The more I want to know Him, the more He reveals Himself to me. God does not stop giving until we say stop.
With free will comes the ability to decide how much of God you really want. This is not based on your words but on the desires of your heart. You can say (and do) all the right things and fool the people around you but God knows what is really in your heart. You have no secrets from God.
Being honest with God about what is in your heart enables you to receive more from Him. Although God is always giving, if your heart is full of self concern or greed or seeking the praise of men, then you will have little room for Him.
It is only when we shine the light of God's mercy through Jesus Christ in our hearts that we can clean out and remove the things that restrict God's presence in us. 1 Peter 1:4 in the Message Bible says that learning to live like Christ means we are no longer tyrannized by our own selfish desires.
As we remove from our lives all the things that are contrary to God's word, we will find new ways to love and serve God. As we open more of ourselves up to God and He gives to us without limits all that we want.
You can replace your selfish ways with as much of God as you want.
