Compassion

Love has been the topic of my Bible reading this last week and yesterday, I read a blog by Christine Caine (of Hillsong) who talked about how Jesus was lead by compassion.  The love of God in us is manifested in compassion.

Jesus was compelled by compassion.  It motivated Him to always meet the needs of the people around Him.  He met their physical needs first, like healing, food, and tax money.  Then He offered to meet their spiritual needs - freedom from condemnation and the weight of sin, He gave them eternal life and the ended their separation from God - thus meeting the needs of the entire person.

But whoever has this world's goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?
                         1 John 3:17 NKJ

We cannot ignore the needs of people.  As children of God, we are to share our excess with those who are lacking.  We best imitate Jesus when we let compassion fuel our love and lead our giving.

Compassion causes us to view the world through the eyes of God spurring us on to do good works.

Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works.
                         Heb. 10:24 NLT

With so much need in the world today, it does not take a lot of effort to find people who need help.  The natural disasters that have ravished the world this year alone have left millions of people with nothing.  There are also thousands of homeless and poor people in every community.  While we cannot give enough to meet every need, we can give enough to meet the needs of one.

Ask God to give you His eyes of compassion and look around your city or neighborhood.  Do what you can to help someone today.

A God first life is compelled by compassion.
