Know Mercy

For I desire mercy and not sacrifice, and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.
                              Hos. 6:6 NKJ

Mercy is more than just forgiveness.  Mercy is love in action and it requires purposeful thought and effort.  Because of mercy, we have been given the opportunity to know God.

The word mercy used in this verse is the Hebrew word  "hesed" and it describes a loyal covenant love that is based on choice and is extended to others as a result of experiencing it first hand in one's own relationship with God.  In other words, we cannot give away what we have not received ourselves.  We have to receive God's love for ourselves before we can give love to others.

God loves us because He chooses to.  His love has nothing to do with how good we are, how talented we are or what church we go to.  God's love for us is given as a gift regardless of what we have done or not done in the past.  This is what covenant means, to love by choice for no reason at all and it includes mercy.

God's primary concern is the establishment and health of our personal relationship with Him.  He already knows we are going to make mistakes.  But He loves us and He has chosen through Christ to forgive our sin so we can have fellowship with Him.

God does not want or need our sacrifices as much as He wants us to know Him and to treat people the same way He has treated us.

I am after love that lasts, not more religion.  I want you to know God, not go to more prayer meetings.
                              Hos. 6:6 Message

Our religious affiliations do not matter to God.  In His eyes there is only one church and one body of Christ.  He is not concerned with how well we can follow rules and rituals but rather how well we know Him.

It is in having a personal relationship with God that we can learn how great He is.  Through our knowledge of God we are able to give to others what He has given to us.

In order to understand mercy, we must first know God.
