Look to Yourselves

Look to yourselves, that we do not lose those things we worked for, but that we may receive a full reward.
                              2 John 8 NKJ

The first three words have stuck in my mind for days.

Look to yourselves.

God wants us to look at ourselves not with self-loathing or condemnation but for encouragement.  He doesn't want us focusing on how many times we have messed up but on how many times we have done better than the time before.

Self-evaluation is necessary for growth.  It allows us to see what areas we are improving in and what areas we still need to surrender to God.  Remember, life is a journey and we are not going to behave perfectly all the time.  God knows our weaknesses and what we need.  He knows us better than we know ourselves.

Look at yourself and ask God to help you see what He sees.  Ask Him to help you recognize what changes you need to make, what you need to let go of, and what needs to stay.  Then spend some quite time with Him waiting for His reply.  Take His answer to heart and obey Him.

Learning to see yourself the way God sees you does not happen over night.  It is not a one time cure all.  It is a continual dialogue between you and God that enables you to imitate Jesus Christ in all situations and deepens your intimacy with Him.

A God first life is constantly moving and growing closer to Him.
