Faith, Hope, and Love
Therefore having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. And not only that but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope. Now hope does not disappoint because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.
Rom. 5:1-5 NKJ
Faith is believing and hope is confident expectation. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, we believe we are right with God and receive His Holy Spirit.
It is our faith that gives us the hope that God will do all He has promised. It is the presence of the Holy Spirit within us that changes our character so that we become more Christ like. It is through the teaching and guiding of the Holy Spirit that we learn to walk in love. And it is all based on the choice to serve God.
When we pursue God, we are seeking a greater understanding of love.
There have been many times that I have asked God, "Make me more like You." And I expected it to just happen without any effort on my part. But I have learned that walking in love is the most like Christ that I can be and it does not come easily or naturally to my flesh.
Human nature is very self centered. Without the help of the Holy Spirit and our own willingness, we cannot learn to walk in love. It is through our cooperation with the Holy Spirit that we are enabled and empowered to receive and give love.
Just as we choose to give our lives to the Lord, we choose to learn about and walk in love. In other words, we choose to know God.
We live by faith in a hope that does not disappoint because it is embedded in the love of God.
