Forgetfulness
Forgetfulness is part of human nature. Everyone, at some point in time, forgets something. Actually, we forget a lot of things and some people forget more than others. With so much information so readily available and life so full of things to do, places to go, and people to talk to, it's a real challenge to remember anything. But we are not the only ones who struggle with memory problems.
In the Old Testament people built alters with rocks and told stories to help themselves stay mindful of what God had done for them. But even with piles of rocks around them, the Israelites would still forget about God's faithfulness and freak out or complain about things.
With forgetfulness we often find ungratefulness.
The solution to our forgetfulness can be found in Jesus Christ. Instead of building markers to help us remember all that God has done for us, we are called to know God through Jesus.
When Jesus was transfigured on the mountain, Peter suggested they build three memorials but God Himself stepped in and answered Peter saying:
"This is My Son, marked by My love. Listen to Him."
Mark 9:7 The Message
Listening is one of the building blocks of a relationship. In the New Testament we are invited to have a genuine relationship with God through Jesus Christ. It is by living with Him that we are reminded of God's faithfulness to keep His word.
God's solution for our forgetfulness is a relationship with Jesus Christ.
A relationship with Jesus is like any other relationship in your life, it is not built in a day and it requires effort and diligence on your part. It is in learning for ourselves who Jesus is that we come to know God and in knowing God we find confidence in His faithfulness.
Our daily relationship with Jesus is a living alter that keeps us aware of God's faithfulness.
