Rest in Freedom
Our faith in Christ has set us free from the obligations of religion and opened the doors for us to live our everyday lives with God. We are no longer chained to the weight of trying to earn God's approval. It is through our acceptance of Jesus Christ and what He has done on our behalf that we are accepted by God.
We know very well that we are not set right with God by rule-keeping but only through personal faith in Jesus Christ. How do we know? We tried it -- and we had the best system of rules the world has ever seen! Convinced that no human being can please God by self-improvement, we believed in Jesus as the Messiah so that we might be set right before God by trusting in the Messiah, not by trying to be good.
Gal. 2:16 The Message
We cannot earn God's approval or favor. Rule-keeping will not get us closer to God. The more we try to get acceptance from God through our own efforts, the farther away from Him we move. It is only in believing in Jesus Christ that we are able to come closer to God.
What we believe in our hearts is more important to God than how well we behave.
In the book of Hebrews, Paul talks about entering the rest of God. The only way in is through believing.
For only we who believe can enter His rest...
Heb. 4:3 NLT
For all who have entered into God's rest have rested from their labors, just as God did after creating the world.
Heb. 4:10 NLT
It is only by entering this rest that we find freedom from trying to earn God's approval. This place of rest is ours for the taking. We no longer have to break our backs trying to do enough to be well thought of by God. Jesus has set us free to live life with God and not live in bondage to a set of rules.
Our faith in Christ makes us acceptable to God and allows us to put aside the religious rules we have been living by in exchange for the freedom to be who God made us to be with Him at our side.
So, quit trying to earn God's approval based on your own efforts.
Rest in the freedom you have been given through Jesus Christ.
