Don't say, "I will get even for this wrong." Wait for the LORD to handle the matter.
Prov. 20:22 NLT
These wise words are intended to stop us from retaliating. Evil is never defeated if it is paid back with more evil. You know the old saying, "Two wrongs don't make a right."
When we are hurt, the natural response is to pay back the one who has caused our pain. We want them to feel as bad as we do. But this is not the best response. When one wrong is done in response to another, the only thing accomplished is the perpetuation of evil.
There is only one way to stop evil and that is by doing good.
See that no one pays back evil for evil, but always try to do good to each other and to all people.
1 Thes. 5:15 NLT
I like the word "try" in this verse. God has promised that whatever I try to do as I imitate Christ, He will give me the strength and ability to do it. So even though my efforts may seem weak, His grace makes me strong enough to do what He has asked of me and that is to do good.
Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
Rom. 12:21 NKJV
When I give in and return evil for evil then I am allowing evil to overcome me. By purposefully choosing to respond like Jesus, I am overcoming evil with good.
God is just. All those who purposefully walk in evil, harming others, will be held accountable before Him. I can guarantee that God's anger and wrath are more powerful than ours.
It is hard, when you are hurting, to stop the thoughts of revenge. Our minds will bombard us with all kinds of foolishness in response to our pain. This is when we have to dig our heels in and purposefully choose to be like Jesus. We have to remind ourselves (over and over) that God will take care of anyone who does us harm.
Responding with kindness no matter how you are treated is part of being a follower of Christ. He did not say anything hateful or respond with violence at all during His abuse and torture at the hands of men prior to His crucifixion.
Keep your mouth closed and your thoughts focused on Jesus whenever you are tempted to respond without kindness. Don't let yourself hash the situation over multiple times in your mind. Give it to God and walk away from it both mentally and emotionally.
Learning to let God take care of those who do us wrong is part of living for Jesus.
Be a superhero in God's army by defeating evil with kindness every chance you get.
