Expectation Free

Jesus died to set us free from religious law and give to us instead a personal relationship with God, the Father.  All week we have talked about how the gift of freedom transforms our public life.  Today we will look at how freedom affects our relationship with our self.

...live freely, animated and motivated by God's Spirit.
                              Gal. 5:16 The Message

I don't know about you but I can ride myself pretty hard.  I tend to set high expectations for others and even higher ones for myself.  This can create a lot of inner turmoil when I try to live freely with God and still achieve my own standards.  Recently, I was reminded that my expectations for myself do not come from God.

God loves us.  Period.  The end.  His love is not swayed by how well we live up to a set of rules.  Whether we are good or bad, strong or weak, young or old God simply loves us and all He wants is for us to live in response to His love.

Living a free life does not include holding ourselves to a set of certain behaviors or a specific way of doing things and there is no self condemnation.

What are your expectations for your life?  Do you think you have to do certain things at certain times of the day?  In a certain order?  Do you base your self worth on how well you follow your own rules?  Or maybe, you are totally opposite and live life spontaneously without any regard for others?

Whether you live with lots of rules or few rules, God loves you and through Jesus Christ you can live freely and enjoy your life.

Love is the foundation of a free life.  So let go of your self made rules and stop beating yourself up when you think you have failed.  Live freely in the love of God.

A free life is lead, guided and directed by the Holy Spirit, not our expectations.
