Purposeful Thinking
For the rest, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is worthy of reverence and is honorable and seemly, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is is lovely and lovable, whatever is kind and winsome and gracious, if there is any virtue and excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think on and weigh and take account of these things [fix your minds on them].
Phil. 4:8 Amplified
The word "fix" here means we have control over what we think about. We can choose our thoughts.
For many years I let my thoughts repeat to me the things I heard said about me (these were not compliments either). The negative thoughts about myself kept me defeated and miserable. I lived afraid to try new things or to let people get close to me even though I wanted desperately in my heart to be accepted.
Negative thoughts are like chains that keep us bound in one place preventing us from growing.
I wish I could tell you that freedom from negative thinking comes over night but it doesn't. It takes time and purposeful intent to let go of the negative (which is not true) and replace it with what God says (which is true).
To defeat my negative self thoughts, I found scriptures that told me how God saw me and what He thinks of me. I had a sheet of paper with all the verses written down and I would read them out loud every night. Just hearing myself speak God's word about me made a huge difference.
When negative thoughts came to my mind, I would discard them like I was taking out the trash and replace them with one of the verses on my sheet of paper. Everyday got better as the number of negative thoughts decreased.
During this time, as I purposefully let go of the negative thoughts, I found not just my thoughts changing but my life was changing as well. Situations no longer looked hopeless, instead I found I could look forward with hope because I knew that God was looking out for me.
Our lives are built on our thoughts. What we think about ourselves and others affects our interactions and can either limit or promote our growth. Life is wasted when we don't control our thoughts.
Anything without purpose will over time flounder, weaken, and die. If you don't pay attention to what you are thinking about and be purposeful in what you do think about then at the end of your life on earth, your accomplishments will be few and you will wish you had done things different.
Be purposeful in what you think about. Use this verse in Philippians as the filter to guard your mind (and your life) from being wasted by negativity.
Choose to think about God's Word.
