Blind Men

This week as we think about openness, God has been teaching me about living with my eyes closed.

Many people walk around claiming to be followers of Jesus Christ and yet continually turn a blind eye to the hurts and needs of others.  Remember the story of the good Samaritan?  Two good Jewish men went by the injured man because he "looked bad."  It was the outsider, the Samaritan man, who helped the wounded man.  It is wrong to base our willingness to reach out on our own judgmental attitudes.

Being blind to the needs of others is a sin.  We are living blindly when we pay attention only to our own needs and wants and ignore those of others.  Self-centeredness is the biggest cause of our inability to see clearly.

Jesus called the Pharisees blind because their self-importance caused them to be unable to recognize God in their midst.  Our refusal to look beyond ourselves impairs our ability to see God.

Living with closed eyes causes us to wander around aimlessly and prevents us from really knowing God.

Acknowledging our blindness and asking God to help us see more clearly is the best prescription for improving our vision.

I will bring the blind by a way they did not know; I will lead them in paths they have not known.  I will make darkness light before them, and crooked places straight.  These things I will do for them, and not forsake them.
                              Isa. 42:16 NKJ

God promises that when we turn to Him and rely on Him for help, He will not only improve our vision but He will stay by our side, never forsaking us.  God is committed to living with us and daily helping us to see more clearly.

We can improve our vision with God's help.  The Bible says that the "eyes of our understanding are opened" when we accept and respond to the presence of the Holy Spirit.  With our improved sight comes greater understanding and wisdom.

The Bible says that the Holy Spirit illuminates our ability to understand, meaning that He helps us to see and apply the truths found in God's word to our lives today.  He enables us to live a Christ-like life.

Jesus restores our sight.  Ask Him to help you see better.
