Marriage 103
With all the comings and goings of life, it can be easy to push our marriage down our list of priorities. But that is not what God had in mind when He ordained marriage.
Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and shall become united and cleave to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
Gen. 2:24 Amplified
Jesus is the only thing that is to take first place in our hearts and second place is only for our spouse. Remember the two commandments given to us by Jesus Himself were to love God first and to love others like we do ourselves. Keeping your spouse as your only number one human relationship is critical to the growth and health of your marriage.
- Marriage is only successful when it is your top priority in life.
A marriage is designed to grow and strengthen over time. Yes, it requires work and it can be the hardest thing to deal with sometimes but nothing can compare to the joy and beauty shared between a husband and wife. What you put into your marriage today will determine the harvest you will have later.
Like the human body, if you don't feed your marriage it will starve to death. Here are some practical things you can do that will help nourish your marriage.
Leave your parents and put your spouse in first place. This may sound cruel but your parents have raised you - you are now grown and married. They can be special friends for you but your spouse is who you have chosen to share your life with. Even childhood or long time friends must move back to make room for your marriage. Your relationship with your spouse comes before any and every other relationship.
A marriage is built over time. It takes going through things to make a strong marriage and when the inevitable issues of life arise, turn to your spouse to help you through. Invest in learning to share your thoughts and feelings with your spouse.
You cannot rush the process of slow cooking your marriage but you can decide to live each day committed to your spouse. Making an effort to spend time on your marriage everyday is a simple way to show your spouse how much you value them. Love notes, words of affirmation and even small gifts remind your spouse that you think of them when you are apart and that you care about them.
Think of something you can do for your spouse today and do it. It's not the size of the action as much as the intention behind it that matters. Look for ways to show your spouse that you love them.
Demonstrate your commitment to your marriage by investing time in it today.
