Marriage 104
I've realized that I have opened a can of worms - the more I keep thinking about marriage for the blog, the more things I think of to say. So, what I have decided to do is post one day a week on marriage. I would really love some feedback on this so let me know if you have specific questions or areas you want me to address.
Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and shall become united and cleave to his wife, and they shall become on flesh.
Gen. 2:24 Amplified
Sounds easy but any of you who are married or have been know that it is a lot harder to become 'one' than we think. Even the concept of being two halves of a whole in marriage does not prepare us for the determination it takes to make our marriage last.
I think I said it before but the secret to a strong healthy marriage is time. You have to invest time into it and it takes time to build. Nothing says "you matter to me" like time does.
Here are a few more ideas and tips to help strengthen your marriage.
Living by the 'rule of Thumper' is one of the single most valuable things you can do to preserve and strengthen your marriage - "If you can't say nuthin' nice then don't say nuthin' at all." Your words (even when not spoken to your spouse) will affect your perception of them. Do not ever bad mouth or belittle your spouse in front of anyone - ever. If you are having problems, find a counselor to help you through. Friends and parents are horrible marriage counselors. Share your issues and concerns with Jesus and your spouse or a certified therapist.
Don't go to bed mad or harbor a grudge. Deal with the hurts you feel and inflict quickly. Make keeping peace between you and your spouse more important than being right or wrong.
Praise your spouse often and treat them with all the love and care that Jesus gives to you irregardless of how they treat you back. Loving someone in spite of unlovely behavior is never easy but if you do it, your marriage will become vibrant and satisfying.
Set aside time as a couple to discuss your dreams, goals, and plans. Uniting together to move in a specific direction helps bring shared purpose into your everyday lives.
Make sure that you both review and discuss the household income and bills. Money is a major destroyer of many marriages so don't ignore it. View money as your employee and make it work for you. Talk about your budget - what you have coming in and what you have going out. Choose together how you will spend your money.
In all things, treat your spouse with respect and dignity.
