Selfish
And Jesus called [to Him] the throng with His disciples and said to them, "If anyone intends to come after Me, let him deny himself [forget, ignore, disown, and lose sight of himself and his own interests] and take up his cross, and [joining me as a disciple and siding with My party] follow with Me [continually, cleaving steadfastly to Me]."
Mark 8:34 Amplified
Since yesterday's post, I have been thinking about the benefits of a selfless life and the differences it has from the selfish life.
A selfless person takes their needs and wants to Jesus and leaving them with Him, they go out and help other people. A selfish person is only out to help themselves.
A selfish person is always looking for ways to get what they want. They spend a lot of time and energy trying to manipulate people and things to suit themselves and find it difficult to help others. A selfless person relies on Jesus to take care of things, although they still do what needs to be done.
A selfless person trusts Jesus completely. Trust is a struggle for the selfish person as they think they are the only ones who can do things right.
Relationships are brutal on selfish people (especially marriage) because they don't recognize the other person's needs or consider them valuable. Their consumption with self supersedes everyone else. Relationships are easy on the selfless person as they value the needs of others and are willing to put effort into the relationship to help it grow.
No grudges are carried by a selfless person - they let go of their hurts by giving them to Jesus. Selfish people have a hard time forgiving because they cannot see past or release their own hurt.
We are all selfish and selfless at times.
Let's make a goal to be more selfless.
