Selfless
And Jesus called [to Him] the throng with His disciples and said to them, "If anyone intends to come after Me, let him deny himself [forget, ignore, disown, and lose sight of himself and his own interests] and take up his cross, and [joining me as a disciple and siding with My party] follow with Me [continually, cleaving steadfastly to Me]."
Mark 8:34 Amplified
People often quote this verse during times of hardship and say things like, "This is my cross to bear." I don't think this is what Jesus meant at all. We are not called to live a life of poverty, sickness or struggle. Yes, there will be seasons of life that are hard and full of grief but we are not alone as we move through them and we are certainly not meant to stay in them.
In John 10:10 Jesus says He came to give us life and life more abundant. This life is not based on material things. It is based on a personal relationship with Him. Our trust and confidence in Jesus grows the more we get to know Him and it frees us from worrying about ourselves.
In knowing Jesus will take care of us, we find the freedom to think more of others and how we can help them. We no longer have to fret about ourselves and what 'we' want because we have chosen to follow Christ. This does not mean we don't make decisions for ourselves or have to work hard because we do. But everything we do and every decision we make is done without the hidden motives of selfishness or greed.
Trusting in Jesus results in a selfless life.
Living a selfless life does involve taking care of what you have been given (your body, family, home and possessions) but it also includes looking out for the needs of others.
A selfless person allows God to work through them to reach out to hurting people.
