Marriage 106

Whoever would love life and see good days must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from deceitful speech.  He must turn from evil and do good; he must seek peace and pursue it.
                              Eph. 3:10-11 NIV

Our words have power.  They carry the ability to build up or tear down.  Nothing causes as much destruction in a marriage as careless words.

It may seem harmless at first to complain or put down your spouse to your close friends but letting these words out of your mouth causes a ripple effect that will eventually destroy your marriage if you do not restrain yourself.

Once the negative comments about your spouse come out of your mouth and enter your ears, your thoughts towards them begin to change.  The more you put your spouse down the more your mind will focus on and look for things to complain about.  This is how the cycle of negative thoughts about your spouse begins and once it gets going, it will require a huge effort on your part to stop.

If you are determined to have a marriage that lasts a lifetime, then you are going to have to look away from the flaws and weaknesses of your spouse and focus instead on their good qualities and talents.  It helps to remind yourself that you have your own set of issues and faults that you want your spouse to overlook.

All marriages go through tough times and it is vital to the life and health of your marriage to find a non-biased person who will listen to you and help you through, if needed.  This person should not be a best friend or a parent but someone outside your social circle.  A pastor, church counselor, or marriage therapist can be a huge help during these rough patches.

Just as negative words have a negative impact on your marriage, positive words can strengthen your marriage.  Hearing yourself say good things about your spouse will keep these positive things in the front of your mind and will increase your overall marital satisfaction.

Help make your marriage great by developing the habit of looking for and complimenting the great things about your spouse.
