Temporary to Eternal

I used to be very rigid in the rules I had for my life because they kept me safe in the predictable.  When things changed (as they frequently do) I would get upset.  I would also limit my involvement in activities and relationships that did not conform to the timeline of my life.  For example, I have always been an 'early to bed early to rise' kind of person but I had a rigid 8 PM bedtime that I would not alter.  Quite often, my inflexibility left me feeling very lonely as others were not as committed to my timeline as I was.

It has taken me quite a while to realize that holding on to 'my way' of living life prevents me from having a strong relationship with Jesus.

In the same way, anyone who holds on to life just as it is destroys that life.  But if you let it go, reckless in your love, you'll have it forever, real and eternal.
                              John 12:25 Message

Day to day life is full of so many obligations and demands for our attention that it can be hard to find time to spend with Jesus.  In Revelations 2:4 Jesus reminds the church in Ephesus to return to their first love.  They had gotten so caught up in their work that their hearts pulled back from God.  The same thing can happen to us when we let what we are doing take over our life.

We cannot successfully hold on to things and maintain a relationship with Jesus.  Remember the story about the rich young ruler?  The more we let life's demands consume us, the less room we have for God.

Today's verse is our reminder to not let the busyness of this temporary life take the place of our eternal relationship with Jesus Christ.
