Run of the House

I love the Word of God!  Every time I open my Bible, God speaks to me - He loves on me, teaches me, encourages me, reminds me, and corrects me.  Through the time I spend reading my Bible and thinking about what I have read, I learn more and more about who Jesus is and what genuine love is really like in action.

I am still in Colosians chapter 3.  The call to simply hang out with Jesus is so overwhelming.  Just pausing in His presence fills me with inexplicable joy.  I am unable and unwilling to move beyond this place just yet.

Let the peace of Christ keep you in tune with each other, in step with each other. None of this going off and doing your own thing. And cultivate thankfulness. Let the Word of Christ—the Message—have the run of the house. Give it plenty of room in your lives. Instruct and direct one another using good common sense. And sing, sing your hearts out to God! Let every detail in your lives—words, actions, whatever—be done in the name of the Master, Jesus, thanking God the Father every step of the way.
                              Colossians 3:15 Message

We talked the other day about camping out in God's word but in order to camp out we must also allow it to live and dwell within us.  Daily Bible reading is as necessary for our spiritual growth as food is for our bodies.  All week, I have been hearing:

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly.

I have often referred to myself as if I was a house with various rooms that are used for different purposes.  I also had closets that I kept firmly shut in an effort to avoid dealing with pain and hurt.  But because God's word is alive and active (Heb. 4:12), when we give it the run of the house - everything is subject to change, including those closet doors.  Now don't let this stop you from actively pursuing God.

EVERYTHING God asks us to do, no matter how hard it is, is for our own good.

So when He says to give His word the run of the house we can be assured that if we do it, we will have healing for our hurts, forgiveness for our sins, and peace in our hearts.

Jesus is the Word made flesh (John 1:14) and when we let the Word loose in our lives we are basically giving Him an open invitation to help us grow.  Jesus will help us to live each day to the full but only when we allow Him to.  We have to choose Him.  We make the decision to open our lives up to the transforming power of the Word of God and thereby plant the seeds of faith that will over time produce a harvest of love, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, faithfulness, goodness, kindness, and self control (Gal. 5:22).

Our decision to surrender our lives to Christ has to be lived out in our daily lives by choosing to live according to God's Word instead of being tyrannized by our emotions.

We can choose how we will behave.  We can choose our words.  We can even choose our thoughts.  And we can do it all without consulting "how we feel" about it.  We can always choose to do the right thing because with Jesus living in us, we have the power, love and sound mind (2 Tim. 1:7) given to us by God that can stop our feelings from leading us around the same old neighborhood.

Every promise of God will be fulfilled in our life when we give Jesus the run of the house.
