What You Know

But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness.
                              1 Tim. 6:11 NIV

In this verse, Paul is instructing Timothy to not value worldly wealth or money above his relationship with God.  Money in and of itself is not bad but when we chase after money instead of chasing after God, the Bible promises that we will suffer many griefs (1 Tim. 6:10).

Pursuing God and keeping Him the center of our lives does not stop us from experiencing tough times but it does allow us to live above our emotions.  The desires of our emotions once acquired will lose their appeal and drag us down.  That is why we do not live according to how we feel.

Our feelings are constantly changing.  One minute they want this and the next it is that.  They are fickle and they suck our energy by keeping us engaged in the useless pursuit of the objects of their desire.

Like many people I spent a lot of my life following my emotions in the pursuit of love and happiness.  I would desire someone thinking they would make me happy and love me only to find that they didn't.  So then I would want something else thinking again that it would do the trick but once that object was obtained it only became a burden of work.  I could not find lasting happiness or genuine love in other people or things.  I did, however, find it in Jesus Christ.

Jesus is the One constant in my life that never changes.  He ALWAYS loves me and He ALWAYS will.  Even knowing all my secrets, He loves me.  The love of God for me has fulfilled my every dream and desire and yet there are still times that my emotions will tell me, "It's not enough."

When my feelings get riled up, I have to go back to, cling to, and stand on what I know to be the absolute truth.

This is part of me learning to live my life on purpose.  Instead of letting my emotions dominate my life, I daily choose to keep my mind focused on what I know is true.  I focus on Jesus Christ and make a conscious desicion to follow Him.

I am learning that I can do the right thing even when I don't feel like it.

You, too, can overcome your emotions and make good choices for your life.  It's not easy and it does not happen overnight but your continual pursuit of righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness will keep you on the highway of holiness.

Refuse to let your emotions lead you around in circles like a dog that chases it's tail.

Choose to live on purpose by making decisions based on what you know is true and not by how you feel.
