Praise Him
I have been talking a lot lately about thinking things on purpose. I firmly believe that what we think about affects our choices which in turn shapes our life. Therefore, we have to choose our thoughts. In the past this was a huge struggle for me because most of my thoughts about me and my life were negative. They focused mostly on all the things I did not do right or failed to do at all.
This weekend I had planned to spend some quiet time alone with God at the lake but never got there. I woke up this morning with my thoughts already berating me for not doing it. I turned immediately to God and asked for His help. God's reply was this Psalm.
Praise the Lord, all you nations! Praise Him, all you people! For His mercy and loving-kindness are great toward us, and the truth and faithfulness of the Lord endure forever. Praise the Lord! (Hallelujah!)
Psalm 117 Amplified
Praising God takes the focus off of us and what we've done and puts our attention on Him. In Acts chapter 14, Paul admonished the people of Lystra to stop making people and things into gods. He tells them what they are doing is vain and foolish and instructs them to turn away from these useless things to the living God, Who created all things (Acts 14:15).
It is easy for us to get distracted by the things of this physical world and forget there is a whole other spiritual side to our lives but when we praise God, it shifts our thoughts back to Him.
Praise turns our thoughts away from useless things.
No matter what is going on around me, when I stop to praise God I am filled with an overwhelming sensation of His presence. My whole being is consumed by His goodness and I am overwhelmed by all He does for me.
I encourage you today to turn away from useless things. Praise God constantly for the many things He has done for you and given you. If you need to, write down a list of statements from scripture that describe the promises of God, carry it with you and use it to praise Him.
God is so good to us. Let's not forget to acknowledge His greatness in return.
