What Now?
I have experienced for the first time the sudden death of a friend. My heart aches and I'm not sure what to do with the pain. I also have another friend who has been fighting cancer for a long time. Grief, it seems, is part of life. But what do we do with it when it comes?
My greatest source of comfort is Jesus. I talk to Him about my feelings and share my busted heart with Him then I open up the book of Psalms.
That's where I am this morning.
This is my comfort and consolation in my affliction: that Your word has revived me and given me life.
Psalm 119: 50 Amplified
Through the Word I can remind myself of God's great love and compassion and understanding for me when I am at a loss. God's promises are always true. He always keeps His word and when I read His word, my heart is revived and my hope grows bigger.
For whatever was thus written in former days was written for our instruction, that by [our steadfast and patient] endurance and the encouragement [drawn] from the Scriptures we might hold fast to and cherish hope.
Romans 15:4 Amplified
Our hope is kindled to life in the midst of pain and anguish when we put our trust in God's word.
Without spending time reading our Bibles and thinking about what God has promised us, when trouble comes, we will flounder in the darkness not sure of what to do or which way to go. We need to know the Word of God in order to keep our heads above water when the floods come.
I recently saw this great quote on Facebook: We cannot recognize lies unless we first know the truth.
God's word is truth. It has stood the test of time and is just as relevant and applicable to our lives as it was when it was first written. Jesus repeatedly quoted the word of God when He was tested by the devil and He won everytime. He is our example in how to make it through the tough times.
He shows us how to keep our hope alive and growing even in the darkest of times. He gives us wisdom to make good choices. He strengthens us to take that next step. He enlightens us so we can see clearly the path of God before us. He comforts us when we are hurting. And through it all, He loves us without hesitation or limit.
So next time you find yourself asking the question, "What now?" search for your answer in the only place that reveals the truth, God's word.
The word of God is all we need to navigate all the waters of life.
