Delight - Psalm 37
I love God. Not for all the many wonderful things He has done for me (which I am grateful for and enjoy) but for Who He is.
Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He will give you the desires and secret petitions of your heart.
Psalm 37:4 Amplified
When I first gave my life to Christ, I saw this verse and thought of all the stuff I wanted. But since then, God has taught me that the things of my heart, the things that cannot be seen but only experienced are far more valuable than the material stuff.
As we pursue God we discover that He is no where near as complicated as we think He is. Religion can often feed into the mentality that we have to work off or pay back the debt that Jesus paid for us. But this is not true.
Everything we receive from God is a gift. Jesus paid the price required for our atonement and in return He gave us two very specific commandments: love God and love people. That's it. He left the how we do it up to us.
In choosing to live by these two commandments with God's help, we discover that He abundantly supplies everything we need. His faithfulness encourages us to believe He will continue to provide for us and all the concerns we have in bigger ways than we can imagine. We learn that when we let Him, God will give us far better and greater things than we thought we wanted to begin with.
True joy does not come from getting our own way all the time. Our joy comes from a deep and satisfying personal relationship with Jesus that has nothing to do with our strengths and weaknesses but everything to do with our heart's response to what God has given us.
All people, every single one of us, wants to be loved and accepted. It is the greatest desire of our heart to be mutually connected to another heart and there is not another heart as pure and genuine as Gods.
As we spend more time with God and invest in our relationship with Him, our desire for material things is replaced by a longing for more eternal things, things that have unsearchable power and indescribable joy.
The Lord is my delight.
Take delight in the LORD, and He will give you your heart's desires.
Psalm 37:4 NLT
Our greatest joy comes from simply acknowledging and living in the loving presence of God.
