Being You

Be yourself.  God made you to be you not an imitation of someone else.

You were bought with a price [purchased with a preciousness and paid for by Christ]; then do not yield yourselves up to become [in your own estimation] slaves to men [but consider yourselves slaves to Christ].
                              1 Corinthians 7:23 Amplified

There are many people who say yes to Christ then spend their time trying to fit in to society's expectations. They put all their effort into being like people who don't know Jesus Christ.  But God (I love saying that!) made us as unique and individual reflections of Himself.  We were made in Gods image not anyone else's.

I struggled with being me for many years as a Christian.  I kept comparing myself to others and always found myself lacking.  Then I would constantly remind myself of all the ways that I didn't measure up.  I was miserable inside and I could not understand why I was drowning in frustration.  So I took it all to the Lord who showed me that I had placed acceptance from the people around me above my desire to be more like Christ.

Working with God to stop comparing myself to others and to actually accept myself has been a process that has allowed me to really life my life verse:

For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set me free from the law of sin and death.
                              Romans 8:2 NKJ

Living to please people or be accepted by them comes with more confinement than living for Christ.  At first this doesn't make sense but let's take a closer look.

When we try to imitate other people, our lives are limited by their style and standards.  It's like trying to play a football game on a 5 yard field instead of the 100 yard field.  There is no room to stretch, move, or grow.  Our lives become limited to what the person we are imitating says, does, and wear.    We sacrifice our individuality in the pursuit of the false belief that if we are like them then we will be happy or our life will be better.

Trying to be accepted by other people does not encourage self development or individual thinking. Trying to be like Christ does.  Yes, we were made in the image of God but He is infinite, people are not.  He is not limited like humans in wisdom, understanding or ability and He wants us to explore our world and decide what we like and don't like.  God wants us to use our minds and make our own choices but He also wants us to rely on Him for the entire journey of our life.

Stop seeking the approval or acceptance of people and experience the freedom and joy that comes from being you.  Ask God to help you and don't turn back.  Learn with His help to be you.

You are a priceless, one of a kind creation in God's eyes, it's up to you to live like it.
