Developing Habits
The last few days we have been talking about our hope in Christ based on Romans 5:2-5 and how our lives can change and hope can grow when we keep our focus on God and what He has promised instead of letting our troubles consume us. God is bigger and stronger than anything we will go through.
Today we are looking a verse 4 and how we develop the habit of living a hope filled life.
And endurance (fortitude) develops maturity of character (approved faith and tried integrity). And character [of this sort] produces [the habit of] joyful and confident hope of eternal salvation.
Romans 5:4 Amplified
We will never know how strong God is without going through trials with Him. Likewise, we will not recognize strengths and weaknesses in ourselves without being tested. God does not want us to live only half a life. He doesn't want us to miss any of the good things He has planned for us and sometimes the only way to help us see beyond where we are is to allow us to experience things that will be hard for us.
In the fires of life we will discover the character of God and ourselves. The Bible describes how our lives will be tested by fire. The eternal nature of God will endure these fires. Everything we do that matches God's character of love will endure them, as will our hope in Him.
As we persevere and keep going on our journey of life with God, we develop habits. Life experiences have a way of teaching us things we cannot learn from reading or watching. When we do things with a painful outcome, we learn not to repeat those things and when we find joy or success by doing something we continue to do that thing in order to increase our joy. Over time, all these situations we experience will shape the habits of our daily life.
Going through tough times without quitting builds our character and our hope because they allow us to see ourselves clearly and at the same time reaffirm God's strength and faithfulness to always keep His word. We learn we can count on God to help with anything because He has helped us in the past.
God is right beside us. He never leaves us. It does not matter where we go or what we do, He is there. Because of our faith in Jesus Christ, our sin is forgiven and removed. It is our hope in Christ that secures our eternal salvation. It is our hope in God's promises that brings them into action in our lives.
We develop the habit of hope when we go through the tough times without quitting.
