Good to All

Jesus gave us two specific commandments.  One was to love God and the other was to love each other.  There was no clause inserted saying we could pick and choose who to love.  The command was simply to love others more than ourselves.  In Paul's letter to the Galatians, He tells us how to love others.

Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone—especially to those in the family of faith.
                              Galatians 6:10 NLT

Do good to everyone.  Be good to all people.  Remember that God loves every person no matter what they have done or failed to do.  As Christ's ambassadors we are to reflect that love to every person we come in contact with.

We love others by treating them with the respect, dignity, and consideration that we want for ourselves and that Jesus has given us.  It means putting aside our opinions and helping each other out whenever we can.  It means accepting each others strengths and weaknesses without ridicule or condemnation.  It means we chose to treat people the way God treats us.

Everyday we are given chances to be kind to one another.

Opportunities to do something good for someone else will always come up, we just have to be looking for them.  We can help people carry stuff, hold doors, or listen to them.  We can be patient and polite to clerks in stores and the people who serve us our food.  We can offer to help someone with a project, compliment them or bring them a coffee when we get one for ourselves.  It is amazing how being good to people can change the atmosphere in a room and lighten a heavy load.

A little kindness can go a long way.

Now let's be honest, it is not easy to be kind to people who have hurt us or mistreated us.  In fact, it is very difficult but Jesus did it.  Hanging on the cross, Jesus asked God to forgive the people who had tortured Him and were killing Him.  So, we can do it too.

Keep in mind that anything God asks us to do, He gives us the ability to do.  The power of the Holy Spirit that lives in us as believers in Jesus Christ is more than enough to help us be good to each other.  We can treat every person with kindness because the power of God within us is stronger than anything in this world (1 John 4:4).

Remember that old saying - Actions speak louder than words.  Sometimes our best preaching of the gospel is done without saying anything.  The way we treat people says it all.

We can be good to all people because Jesus is good to us.
