Great and Most Important

And He replied to him, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind (intellect). This is the great (most important, principal) and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as [you do] yourself. These two commandments sum up and upon them depend all the Law and the Prophets.
                              Matthew 22:37-40 Amplified

Love is important to God because He is love (1 John 4:8).  We cannot separate the two.  When we say we know God then we are saying we know love.  But God is not like anything we have seen before.  He is nothing like anything we have encountered before.  And He most definitely is not like anyone we have known before.

Recognizing that we know so little about God implies that our understanding of love may also be lacking.  Many people claim to know God and many think they know what love is but if both of these were true - then our world would not be in the mess it is and the Church, the Body of Christ, would be stronger.

The word "love" is casually thrown around in our every day lives.  We love this person and that person.  We love something we are eating or drinking.  We love changing seasons and doing different things.  We love to sing, dance, play, laugh, and work (sometimes).  We love our possessions, money, entertainment or a store. If we actually counted how much we use the word "love," I bet we would be astonished.

Jesus said the great and most important commandment is to love God.  But we cannot truly love without understanding what love is and we cannot love what we do not know.

With these thoughts in mind, I challenge you to join me in a study about love.  I encourage you to spend time reading your Bible, writing down scripture, thinking about what you've written, and saying them out loud.  Ask God to show you any differences between your life and His word.  Ask Him to help you understand and apply the truths of His word in your everyday life.  Ask the Holy Spirit to help you live God's word.

Love is more than a word, it is a way of life.  It is an action that reflects God.
