Be Near Me

One of my favorite verses in scripture has been stuck in my mind for several days.  I have not been able to leave it nor have I been able to come up with anything to say until today.

One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek, inquire for, and [insistently] require: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord [in His presence] all the days of my life, to behold and gaze upon the beauty [the sweet attractiveness and the delightful loveliness] of the Lord and to meditate, consider, and inquire in His temple.
                              Psalm 27:4 Amplified

David knew and understood the one thing that was most important to living a powerful life for the glory of God - being in His presence.  He knew that the nature of God could not be transferred to him without devoting special time for just him and the Lord.

The presence of God is not only a gift, it is the vehicle through which He imparts His holiness unto imperfect man.  The Hebrew word for holiness is the same as the Greek word used for sanctified.  While being holy is part of God's nature, it is transferred to us only when we are in His presence and focused solely on Him.  We cannot receive the holiness of God apart from His presence.  It is the one thing that makes us holy and only there are we sanctified.

The more we pursue God's presence and seek Him first in our lives, the more like Him we become.  This process sets us apart and bestows on us the favor, blessing, and ability of God in every situation we encounter.  There is no magic formula or special prayer needed.  The only requirement is to sit with God.

Be still and know that I am God.
                              Psalm 46:10

I love the fact that when I sit with God, no matter where I am at, I do not have to say anything.  I can simply open my heart and surrender it up to Him.  God will not refuse the invitation of a sincere heart.  In allowing God this opportunity to talk words are not needed.  His nearness is all I need.  When I am still with God I feel His closeness more than anything else.  His power and His mercy and His grace produce a joy that is unspeakable.

When things around us fall apart and we don't know what to do, we can take comfort that in God's presence we will find all our needs met.  Over the next few days, we will explore some verses that will remind us of all the benefits of just being close to God.

In all the hustle and bustle of life God asks each of us to... "Be near Me."
