Honor

[Let your] love be sincere (a real thing); hate what is evil [loathe all ungodliness, turn in horror from wickedness], but hold fast to that which is good.  Love one another with brotherly affection [as members of one family], giving precedence and showing honor to one another.
                              Romans 12:9-10 Amplified

One of the first days I studied these verses the words "showing honor" jumped off the page at me.  To love people like Jesus does requires us to give honor and respect to each other.  1 Corinthians 13:5 says that love is not rude and we are being rude when we disrespect one another.

According to Dictionary.com honor is a source of credit or distinction and respect means to show regard or consideration.  I looked them up to better understand what it really looks like to love imperfect people who have been made and are greatly loved by our perfect God.

God loves all people.  He does not hold back or refuse His love to anyone.  No matter what someone does or says and regardless of whether they believe in Him or not - God's love for each and every person never changes.  Even when we get angry with God, He loves us.  When we sin, God loves us.  He may not like everything we do but He always loves us.

Because of this great love, God will never be rude to us even though we may have to experience the consequences of our sin.  He will not say ugly or hurtful things to us or about us.  Like wise we are asked to treat each other the same way.

We are all human and we all make bad choices and big mistakes but none of that changes the fact that God made us and He loves us.  When we learn to see each other as God's handiwork, we are able to give each other honor and respect.  Understanding that God values each person as His special creation, the work of His own hands, will help us to see each other not through our own eyes but through the eyes of God.

We show respect and honor for each other when we refuse to gossip or put down anyone and the benefits are astounding.  Saying kind things about our spouses will help fill our homes with peace.  We can improve our work environment by not criticizing our bosses.  Every area of our lives will change when we start giving honor and respect instead of demanding them.

Jesus said the world would know us by the way we love people.  We reveal the love of Christ when we treat everyone with honor and respect.  This does not mean we agree with everything they say and do.  In fact, most of the time we won't, but we choose to respect their right to choose and we honor them by consistently treating them with dignity and kindness.

Show honor to everyone in your life by loving them like God does.
