Make the Promise Yours
I am still thinking about our heart and how it's condition affects and influences our life. Lately I've noticed that too many times we allow our perceptions of something to guide our responses instead of relying on what God has promised us.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.
Prov. 3:5 NKJ
I come into contact with a lot of sick and hurting people on a daily basis. Every one has something they are dealing with. When confronted with the changes required to improve their situation, most of them say one of two things "I can't" or "It's too hard."
As believers in Jesus Christ, those words ought never come past our lips and yet we do it all the time. Truth be told, we do it because we don't stop to think about Jesus being the power to help us overcome. We tend to stay focused on our limited understanding and abilities and completely leave Him out of our assessment of the situation.
When our heart is set on God, nothing is too big (or too small) for us to handle. When our focus is on His promise to get us through there is nothing that can hold us back.
We all go through tough times and experience heartache but we also have the Creator of all things living in us. God has already given us everything we need to weather the storms of life and come through safely and with that experience we also gain a greater understanding of how important we are to Him. He will not allow anything to keep us from reaching our full potential. Everything God allows in our lives is in our best interest whether we can see that or not.
Recently my husband and I were looking back at a period of time where we faced a lot of grief and frustration. We didn't understand why we were going through what we were going through. We thought we were following God's plan for us and could not figure out why we were not moving in the direction we had set our sights on. We kept our trust in God the whole time even though we could not see the benefit of our experiences. Looking back now we can see the fruit of our perseverance as we are using those lessons to help others grow.
Jesus promised we would have trials in this world but that we have no reason to be upset about them because He has already defeated them and took away their power. I love the saying, "Stop telling God how big your problems/issues are and start telling your problems/issues how big your God is."
Keep your heart set on God and full of His word. Write His promises on 3 x 5 cards and carry them with you. Put sticky notes with promises on your bathroom mirror, in your car and on the fridge. Let the Word of God be what you see more than anything else.
No matter what you are facing, trust God.
Cling to His promises.
