What Not To Say
We can never be reminded enough about the power of the words we say and how important it is to think about what we are going to say before we actually say it.
For the Scriptures say, “If you want to enjoy life and see many happy days, keep your tongue from speaking evil and your lips from telling lies.
1 Peter 3:10 NLT
Our words have power. They not only affect us but they affect the people around us. With them, we can encourage, comfort, and strengthen one another or we can wound, destroy, and kill. Our words are seeds that will grow and bear fruit. Today's verse points out two specific things that prevent us from enjoying our lives - lying and gossiping.
No one likes to be lied to. Lying always creates havoc and discord. It is disrespectful and demeaning. There is no such thing as a good lie. Every lie no matter how small or insignificant it seems will create stress. It will quickly boomerang out of control and become a big concocted story that you will eventually get caught in.
Gossiping never produces good fruit either, and in the eyes of God it is evil. Even if you just listen to it, it is dangerous. Gossip taints the way you see a person because it provides an opportunity for you to entertain thoughts that are derogatory and most likely untrue. The stories you hear about someone will come to your mind every time you see them and will affect the way you treat them.
While it is not always easy to keep our mouths shut and to tell the truth, it is possible (Luke 18:27). As followers of Jesus Christ, we no longer have to rely solely on our own strength or abilities. God is our helper. He is our strength. Through Christ, we can do everything God asks us to do (Phil. 4:13). God will not ask us to do anything that He is unwilling or unable to help us with.
Pay attention to what you hear and say. Think about what you are going to say before you open your mouth. Choose your words carefully, refuse to listen to gossip, and always tell the truth. Ask God for His help in the particular areas that you may be hard for you and keep at it. Don't get discouraged or quit when you mess up. Just keep trying.
Happy days and enjoyment are the results of speaking true and good words.
