Placing Trust
Every time we choose to obey God, we keep ourselves safely under His protection. But when we choose to do things our way instead of God's way, then we open a door in our life to the enemy, the devil. The Bible says the little foxes spoil the vine and even our smallest act of disobedience will give the devil an opportunity to disrupt our life.
In addition to submitting our lives to God and our government, we are commanded to submit to one another. Now if you are like me and people have hurt you and taken advantage of you then these verses will initially cause you to be uncomfortable.
And further, submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.
Ephesians 5:21 NLT
For wives, this means submit to your husbands as to the Lord.
Ephesians 5:22 NLT
Submitting to one another requires absolute and total trust in God. Because people are imperfect, it is hard to surrender to those God has placed in authority over us. We see their faults because our vision is limited to the light of a natural world.
We can submit to each other with the confidence that God has got our back. His protection and provision are never more evident than when we step out in faith and choose to obey Him even when we are uncomfortable and unsure of the outcome. We can submit to each other because God is in control and He will take care of us.
When we submit to each other, we are really submitting to God and our actions demonstrate our trust in Him. A heart committed to God will not refuse to submit to another person because it might get hurt. The truth of the matter is - you will. People will let you down and hurt you but when you submit to them anyways, God will make up to you any result of their poor choices.
Always when the topic of submission comes up, people ask about how to handle situations of abuse. God does not want or expect us to allow another human being to physically or verbally harm us in any way. Wisdom dictates we remove ourselves from such situations and allow God to guide us. Abuse does not come from God and those who mistreat other people will answer to the law and ultimately to God.
We all have someone we have to submit to - our boss, our parents, our Pastor, our laws, our government, and our spouses. Submission is one way we learn to stop insisting on getting our own way all the time and how we learn to trust God.
Through submission, we put our trust in God into action.
