Protective Covering
The Bible tells us we are to submit to God, submit to each other, submit to our boss, and submit to the laws of the land. It also tells women to submit to their husbands. A lack in understanding what the word "submit" really means and how to live it out causes many people to ignore this topic of teaching and therefore miss out on the blessings of God that cannot be manifested in our lives without such knowledge and its application.
Submit to God, and you will have peace; then things will go well for you.
Job 22:21 NLT
God exists in all things and has for all time. Even the unbeliever's life is seen by God but like those who believe and refuse to obey, His presence does not dwell with them. Our refusal to submit in even one area results in a life that is limited to natural barriers instead of being open to the freedom of a spiritual life.
Submit is really just another word for surrender. When we surrender something to God, we are submitting to His plan for that thing. We will never live on this earth without having to submit to something or someone. There are laws in our lands that we obey. We submit to our bosses when we go to work. We submit to God when we let Him lead us instead of doing things our own way. And as wives, we submit to our husbands because God has given them the responsibility for our care and well being.
Everyone must submit to governing authorities. For all authority comes from God, and those in positions of authority have been placed there by God.
Romans 13:1 NLT
Our submission to God includes obeying the laws of the land and our government. It doesn't mean we have to agree with them or like them. We are simply told to obey them. God has placed all authority in our lives and that means when we break the law we are disobeying God.
When we refuse to obey the law (this includes speed limits), we are refusing to submit to God and we remove ourselves from His protective covering and open our lives up to enemy attack. The devil gains access to our lives through our disobedience to God. However, when we obey God everything falls into place and we dwell in the safety of His presence.
Submission to God is our greatest privilege and weapon of defense. God does not ask us to obey just to watch us squirm. He knows that at first it will be uncomfortable and sometimes it will be frustrating but in obeying God we quickly see that His grace increases in us every time we sacrifice our will to His. And with God's grace comes His protection. God now becomes our Shield, our Refuge, our Fortress, and our Deliverer. Every promise of blessing from God enlarges in our lives as we continually and repeatedly choose to obey Him.
Learning to surrender and submit to God is essential to living a God first lifestyle.
