Receiving
There are 16 verses in Psalm 119 in the Amplified Bible that refer to hearing, receiving, loving, and obeying the Word of God (5, 17, 44, 67, 88, 100, 102, 106, 115, 129, 134, 136, 145, 146, 158, 167). We talked about hearing a few days ago and as I was reviewing these verses the following verse from Romans came to my mind.
How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher?
Romans 10:14 NKJV
We cannot truly know or believe in God without first hearing from Him. We must hear from God or about God before the seeds of faith can be planted in our hearts. God is alive and active in our world today. He speaks to us in His Word, through the words of others, and even with the small voice within us.
We are responsible for what we hear. Meaning, that when we hear the Word we have two choices. We either accept it or refuse it. It goes back to the verse in Deuteronomy when God says, "I give you two choices, life or death." The great thing is that God also gives us the right answer to the question, "Choose life." Receiving the word of God and making it part of our lives is choosing life.
Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now Your word do I keep [hearing, receiving, loving, and obeying it].
Psalm 119:67 Amplified
Years ago God showed me a picture of me sitting at a table that was loaded with all my favorite foods cooked just the way I like them. I had an empty plate in front of me but all this food around me. I could not eat the food without reaching out and putting some on my plate. So it is with our faith and the promises of God. God's Word is the buffet that feeds our spirit. When we hear it we are sat down at His table but we can only have His promised blessings when we reach out for them and put them in our lives.
We have to apply His instructions to our lives and feed daily on His promises of protection, strength, and wisdom. This is how we receive God's words. This is how we grow closer to God and learn through practice how to keep Him first in our lives.
The book of James warns us that faith without actions is dead. If we say we believe God's word is true but never put it to work in our lives then we are basically sitting at His table starving to death. Actions demonstrate our faith in God to the enemy. The devil cannot read our minds but he can see what we do. Saying we believe in God and the truth of His word does not defeat the enemy when he attacks. Our faith filled actions do.
Receive God's word today. Take Him at His word. Choose life. Eat well from the table that is never empty and is calorie free.
