A Life Long Journey

From the moment of our birth to our very last breath, we were created to grow.  As in everything else, Jesus is our example to follow in this process.

And the Child grew and became strong in spirit, filled with wisdom; and the grace (favor and spiritual blessing) of God was upon Him.
                              Luke 2:40 Amplified

Jesus was not born as a full grown man and even though He was fully God, He did not skip over the milestones of growth.  He was born a baby and experienced life just as we do.  He had to nurse at His mother's breast and have His diaper changed.  He fell as He learned to walk and run.  He had to learn how to feed Himself and how to dress Himself.  In other words, He grew to be a man.  But He also grew in Spirit as today's verse reminds us.

We don't become strong in spirit without making an effort to grow in spirit.  Just going to church on Sundays is not enough to keep you fed and healthy throughout the week.  When Jesus said He is our daily bread, He really meant for us to partake of Him every day.  That means we need to talk to Him, ask for His help and guidance, and learn who He is by reading the Word of God and applying it to our daily life.

What happens to your body without food and water?  It weakens and eventually dies.  Depending on a weekly church service to feed your spirit is like eating one piece of bread a week.  You may live but you are missing out on a lot.

I don't know why so many people consider the things of this world more important than spending time with God.  It's sad to think of all that they are missing out on and the misery they carry because they don't share their lives with the One who is strong enough to take care of them.  But I digress.

God touch my life with the power of His Word as a teenager.  I did not grow up in a Christian home and knew nothing of the Bible other than the popular stories of Christmas and Easter.  At the age of 16 I was drinking, smoking, using drugs, and sexually active.  I was also depressed, discouraged, hopeless, and suicidal until that one night.   I was sitting on my bedroom floor crying, trying to figure out a way to end the pain when God showed up.  I cannot explain exactly what happened but all I knew was that the answer to my every problem could be found in the little red Bible that someone was going to throw away.

I cannot say that I immediately found relief or strength but I did find hope and many years later I actually was introduced to Jesus Christ.  It was still several years after that, that I finally started spending time reading the Bible and learning scripture for myself.  The changes that have happened in my life as a result of this habit are astounding.

I beg you to start today.  Read your Bible.  Learn scripture.  Apply it to your life.  Let Jesus help you grow in spirit and watch how your life changes for the better.  Let go of your ego and push down your pride so you can receive the full measure of God's grace and mercy in your life.

Everyday we walk this earth is another opportunity we have to continue growing.

Our spirits will not be fully developed until the day we leave this world because growing is a life long journey.
