Building a Solid Foundation
Have you ever been in an earthquake? I have been in many and still remember the first one I was in. It was New Years Eve, my parents were heading out the door and my brothers and I had just settled down on their bed to watch Dick Clark in Times Square on TV. At that time my parents had a waterbed and it suddenly started sloshing and furniture started bouncing and rattling. We quickly ran down the stairs to stand in the door jam by our back door. My parents had not left yet so my mom stood with us kids and my dad stood a few feet away in the center of the kitchen. What seemed to last forever was actually over in under a minute.
It is scary when the ground that we don't usually think much about begins to rock and shake. When we put our confidence and our sense of security in anything but Jesus, we are setting ourselves up heart ache and misery. the things in our lives we consider to be secure begin to shake and crumble, our whole world changes.
Jesus warns us that if we build our lives on anything other than Him, we do so to our own detriment.
Why do you call Me, Lord, Lord, and do not [practice] what I tell you? For everyone who comes to Me and listens to My words [in order to heed their teaching] and does them, I will show you what he is like: He is like a man building a house, who dug and went down deep and laid a foundation upon the rock; and when a flood arose, the torrent broke against that house and could not shake or move it, because it had been securely built or founded on a rock. But he who merely hears and does not practice doing My words is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation, against which the torrent burst, and immediately it collapsed and fell, and the breaking and ruin of that house was great.

When I first met Jesus I didn't know what a life based on Him looked like. I didn't grow up in a godly home so I had no idea where to start. What I did have though, was my Bible and let me tell you from personal experience - that is all you need.
In the book of John we are told that Jesus is the Word of God in a fleshly form. Jesus is the Word and wisdom of God. In order to know Jesus, we have to know what is in our Bibles. Any teaching that does not agree with the Inspired Word of God in our Bibles must not have any place in our lives.
We can count on Christ. He will never fail us. He will never leave us. His love for us never changes. He accepts us as we are and invites us to live a better life than we have in the past. He takes our brokenness and restores us. He heals our sicknesses and stops generational curses from continuing past us. Jesus is our peace, our strength, our joy, and our wisdom.
Through Christ we find the daily nourishment we need for the sustainment of life. In Him we discover who we were created to be, our strengths and our weaknesses, our abilities and our giftings. Anything we need, we will find in Him but we have to search for it. We have to apply His Word to our lives and claim the promises of God as our very own in order to have a solid foundation for life.
As believers in Jesus Christ we are called to build our lives with Him as our foundation.
