Your Will

So many people wrestle and argue with God because they want things done their way.  They want to be the one that makes all the decisions.  They want what they want when they want it.  Instant gratification is considered a right and God has become their puppet to perform their will.

This type of attitude toward God is wrong on many levels.  Our demand to have our own way is based on the erroneous belief that we know what it best and God does not.  Not only is this pride but it is sin and it is one of the greatest lies the devil has got us to believe.

This web of deception has caused us to demote God to being more like a man.  But God is not like us as much as so many of us think He is.  God is pure and holy.  He cannot lie nor can He go against His Word.  Because God is love - He can never do anything to us or give us anything that is bad for us.  God's only intent and motive is to do what is the most beneficial for us.

Everything God brings into our lives is good for us but not everything in our lives comes from God.  Although He does not punish our sins, neither does He remove their consequences.  He does not give us what we deserve but the world we live in and our faulty perceptions of Who God is will.  Our bad choices cannot be blamed on God.  He is not responsible for them.  We cannot blame God for our foolish decisions.  We will experience the unpleasant and often painful results of our poor choices.

Having said all that, I come to today's verse.

Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
                              Matthew 6:10 Amplified

These words were given to us by Christ to help us learn how to pray.  He doesn't say you cannot ask for what you want.  In fact, He tells us in Luke 11:9-10 and John 16:24 to ask and keep on asking.  It is not wrong to ask for what your heart desires.  There is a huge difference though between asking and demanding.

When we demand God does things our way then what we are really saying is that we know better than God what needs to be done.

Asking God for something still makes our desires known but it also says that even though this is what we want, we are confident that God will bring the best outcome for us at the right time.

We demonstrate our faith and trust in God when we ask Him for things.  Demanding, on the other hand, reveals that our trust is in ourselves and not in God.

We can still ask God for whatever we want but we ask knowing that He will bring about His will in our lives and His will is always better for us than our will is.

I've learned this lesson many times on the back side of things that I'd much rather have God's will done in my life than my own.  I still ask for things but the things I ask for now line up with His Word and they come to pass.

Pray boldly knowing that you can ask God for everything your heart desires but also knowing that He will only bring to fruition in your life what is absolutely best for you.

Your will be done, LORD.
