A Helping Hand
I have caused myself a lot of frustration over the years by trying to do things on my own. I thought asking for help was a sign of weakness and therefore, I wouldn't do it. I would struggle and cry and make things so much harder than they needed to be until I finally realized that we all need help sometime. It's actually part of God's plan.
We were made to assist each other. We were made to help one another.
Exercise foresight and be on the watch to look [after one another], to see that no one falls back from and fails to secure God’s grace (His unmerited favor and spiritual blessing), in order that no root of resentment (rancor, bitterness, or hatred) shoots forth and causes trouble and bitter torment, and the many become contaminated and defiled by it.
Hebrews 12:15 Amplified
Paul is instructing the Hebrews to purposefully look out for each other. None of us can walk on this earth without needing help from time to time. We have different strengths and weaknesses that are meant to compliment each other. We were not made to compete amongst ourselves. God's desire was for us to willingly reach out and give assistance to each other as needed.
In the human body each organ or muscle relies on another part of the body to do their job in order for it to function properly. Likewise, in the body of Christ, we need the people around us to carry out their God given function in order for us to do what we are called to do.
By God's great design, our bodies will naturally try to protect and help an injured area. We don't usually give this much thought, we just automatically try not to use the injured part. In the body of Christ because we are all individual people who have been given free will by God, we have to reach out to others on purpose.
Sin has distorted our vision and caused us to think that if we help someone out that they might get more than we will or that they will get what we want to have. The Bible warns us that stingy people will lose what they have and they will be miserable but a generous person will not only find great joy, they will have an overflow in their life that they cannot contain. A generous heart will always be full.
All those years I tried to do everything myself kept me traveling on the "Insanity Road" (like the Israelites taking 40 years to complete an eleven day trip). It kept me so focused on me, myself and I that I was unable to see the need around me let alone reach out and help meet it. My pride stopped me from experiencing what real joy is all about - generosity.
I have never been happier in my life than when I am helping someone else out.
Try it for yourself and see. Spend the next few weeks looking for the needs of people around you and then meeting those needs. Discover for yourself the pure bliss that comes from being a helping hand to someone in need.
