Housekeeping Made Easy
Our heart is the home of the Holy Spirit. Like our earthy homes, we have to guard and care for our heart. The responsibility of keeping our "house" our heart clean is ours. We have to regularly go through it with God and perhaps even another person in order to keep it free from junk.
The housekeeping of our heart is an opportunity for us to separate its contents into two piles. One pile to keep and one to throw out. Gods promises and our life experiences with Him that remind us of His great and unconditional love for us is the pile we keep. The pile that we take out like trash, consists of our anger, bitterness, sin, jealousy, and greed.
Regular heart cleaning is necessary to living out the promises of God. When our hearts are full of hurts, hatred, and unforgiveness, we leave little or no room for the Holy Spirit to dwell in.
David understood the importance of keeping our heart, the dwelling place of God in us, clean and orderly. He shows us that there is a process and that we cannot do this alone. We need the help of God in order to keep our hearts healthy.
Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!
Psalm 139:23, 24 ESV
Below is a teaching I did for Celebrate Recovery. Take the time to listen to it and actually do an inventory of whatever you are holding (or hiding) in your heart that could be stopping you from living closer to God.

When we shine the light of Christ on our hurts, habits, and bitterness, they lose their power over us and we become free. Don't live another day held back by your past. Let the love of God move into your heart and live freely in His love.
Live God first one step at a time.
