How to Hear From God

I have heard many people say, “I’ve tried to read the Bible but I just don’t understand it.”  If that is you, then WELCOME.  You are in the right place.

Before we can get anything out of God’s Word, we have to believe that we will get something.  Open your Bible with the expectation that God is going to speak directly to you.  He will.  In fact, the whole Bible is God speaking to you.  God has given us the gift of the written Word so that we can search it out for ourselves.  The wealth of treasure in our Bibles is limitless.  We could spend all day every day reading and studying it and we would never run out of material to study.

More than your desire to know God and be set free to live in His love, God desires for you to know Him.  According to Jesus, the greatest commandment is to love God with all we have and all we are.

And He replied to him, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind (intellect).  This is the great (most important, principal) and first commandment.
                              Matthew 22:37 Amplified

If God is telling us the greatest thing we can do is love Him then it stands to reason that we would have to know Him.  And in order to know God, we have to go through Jesus Christ Who is the Word in fleshly form (John 1:14).

Hearing from God through Christ as simple as this:  open your Bible and read it.  There are several good books out there that can help you study the Bible.  I used one by Tim LaHaye called, “How to Study the Bible for Yourself.”  I know Joyce Meyer has one as do several other great Bible teachers.  It doesn't matter which one you use as long as it works for you and YOU DO IT.

I have read some passages of scripture for years before I finally understood what they meant.  Don’t let discouragement stop you from pursuing God.  When you come across something that doesn’t make sense to you, stop and ask God about it.  Wait quietly and see if anything comes to mind.  If you are still drawing a blank, move on.  The answer may come a few verses later.

You can also find free downloads or buy Bible commentaries and other study tools to help you understand what something means.  The internet is full of resources you can use to help you too.  Some sites require membership and have fees but some do not. I love my 'YouVersion' phone app that lets me read the Bible anywhere and it has hundreds of reading plans on all kinds of topics that will help you grow in wisdom and understanding.  On my computer,  I have always used Blue Letter Bible (http://www.blueletterbible.org) to find commentaries and cross references.  OliveTree is another website that you can try and I think they have a phone app as well.   Recently I started using one called Logos (http://www.logos.com) that is an app for both my phone and the computer.  They have free ebooks plus a large online library of books you can buy.

The greatest resource you need to study the Bible though is - the Bible itself.  Take your time and read it.  Re-read it.  Write verses out and go back over them.  Memorize the ones that jump out at you.  Ponder their meaning and application in your life.  Ask the Holy Spirit to help you understand what you are reading and to show you how to live it.  God never refuses to answer our questions concerning His Word.

The most vital thing to do is keep pursuing God.  The Bible promises us that when we seek Him, we will find Him.  God will meet us where we are and walk with us for the rest of our time on earth.
