What Goes Around Comes Around

"You're going to eat those words!"

"What you give, is what you'll get."

"What goes around, comes around."

These were sayings I grew up hearing as reminders that I should be mindful of what I say to people and how I treat them.  I wish I could have learned my lesson without having to experience the consequences of hurtful words and a haughty attitude.   How many times have you said something that later came back to bite you in the bottom?

I have experienced the remorse that precedes humble pie more times than I care to admit.  Humble pie is not my favorite meal and yet, eating it was the only way for me to learn that what I say to others and how I treat them is very important.

From the fruit of his mouth a man is satisfied with good, and the work of a man’s hand comes back to him.
                              Proverbs 12:14 ESV

Our words and actions shape our life.  The words we speak and the things we do (whether in secret or in the open) will always have an impact on the life we have.  The Bible says that our words have power.  What we say to other people can do one of two things:  help them grow or hold them back.

God wants our words to be edifying and encouraging.   He wants our actions to be courteous and kind.  This goes beyond the outer level of what we say or do, to the inner most part of our heart where we keep what we really think hidden.  If the motives behind our words or deeds do not match what we are saying or doing, then we are wrong and even though our words may sound sweet and our behavior looks kind, the negative motives we are concealing will be what returns back to us.

The way we treat others is the way others will treat us.  How we talk to people is how people will talk to us.  Our lives will be full of good things when our motives, behaviors, and words are all in agreement with the Word of God.

Think about what you want to say before you open your mouth.

Consider the impact of your actions before you take a step.

Your words and actions today are the seeds that you will harvest in the future.
